This paper explores the tapestry of art and design and the technique and technology required to apply textile techniques to metal. Part I is a case study of the handwoven jewelry of Barbara Berk. Plain Weave and Soumak techniques are illustrated and the interactions of material, form and function are considered. The search for technical information and technology to solve problems and produce a sellable product is discussed. Part II surveys a variety of work made with weaving, basketry and braiding techniques using sheet and wire. Textile structures are examined and the technical considerations required to produce the work are discussed.
