The Hubert Schuster
Scholarship Fund
Dr. Hubert Schuster, a good friend and passionate, long-time supporter of The Santa Fe Symposium, recently passed away. His absence will be sharply felt by all of us at the Symposium and by all those who are better jewelers, better colleagues and better people for having known him. To his family and friends, we offer our deep and heartfelt condolences.

Right after the 2009 Santa Fe Symposium, [my father] and I continued the trip and drove through NM, AZ, UT, CO, and back to NM. We had had this dream of doing a road trip together through the US desert for years and I am so happy that we got the chance to achieve this dream. On that occasion, I took the photo of my father above. It was somewhere along the freeway in the desert of New Mexico and he was feeling very happy. This is how I will remember him.

I am very lucky to be counted among the many friends that Hubert collected in his life time. Hubert was a highly skilled goldsmith with a passion to solve problems and to teach. He was a quiet, quick witted man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was soft spoken and brief of word. It was as if he had an editor who disposed of every possible unneeded word before he opened his mouth, so one learned to listen closely when he spoke because he came quickly to his point. Hubert was highly principled but he was not judgmental of others. He took his work seriously but never himself, and he was a good sport who could and did laugh at himself and with others. He was charming, humble and generous; he could accomplish what others said couldn’t be done, shared his new knowledge freely and then pointed credit away from himself. One of the ways he shared his knowledge was by presenting papers at the Santa Fe Symposium, of which he was a great supporter. Hubert loved a beer at the end of the day and I was privileged to drink one (or more) with him on four continents around the world. The conversation always turned to his favorite subject, his daughters. We both have two daughters whom we dearly love and those are the times I shared with him that I cherish most.
